To promote business leadership, skills development and economic opportunities for Aboriginal women in rural and remote Aboriginal communities in Northern Ontario

The Objectives of the Aboriginal Mentorship Program are to:

1. Expand economic development opportunities and support self-employment for aboriginal women by; 

  • Delivering Business Leadership Training for women living in rural and remote Aboriginal communities in Northern Ontario which will include topics in:

    • Strategic and business leadership
    • Communication and leadership
    • Women’s Peer Circle Development and Support
    • Conflict Management
    • Making the most of community resources and more

 

  • Conduct Financial Management Training with six main components:

    • The Psychology of Money
    • Asking for the Money
    • Getting the Money
    • It’s Your Money
    • Keeping the Money
    • Managing the Money

2. Provide Mentoring and Networking Opportunities;

3. Introduce the Peer Circle concept as a source of peer support for aboriginal women in business and as a source for small business loans

 

Methods of Delivery to reach aboriginal women in rural and remote aboriginal communities will include: 

  • One-one counselling, mentoring and support
  • Group workshops and training – PARO on Wheels (mobile programming to communities)
  • E-learning via video conference and webcasting (KNET & Contact North)
  • Development of a new website - www.enterprisingwomen.ca
  • Networking events and opportunities
  • Promotion of PARO programs and services through development of partnerships and networking contacts – community engagement

 

Current Activities

  • Program Orientation à community engagement, developing networks and linkages with aboriginal economic development contacts and organizations – promoting the Aboriginal Mentorship Program and programs and services offered by PARO
  • Co-developing a Summer Workshop Series, together with our Program Development Intern, on Financial Literacy Training for aboriginal youth
